Live Life - Forget Falls
On average one in three people over 65 years old will have at least one fall this year- with most of these being women. The physical results of the fall are varied from minor bruising to weeks of incapacity and pain and tragically, in around 1500 cases, death. The loss of confidence that can follow a fall can often be as detrimental to your quality of life as any physical damage.
However the good news is that many of these falls can be prevented, it can just take a little bit of thought and slight change in lifestyle. Here are a few Simple Steps to Safety that could prevent you becoming one of next year’s statistics: -
Homev Keep floors and stairs free of clutter.
v Keep stairs well lit –100 watt bulbs are best. (Make sure the shade can take it though!)
v Pale, plain wallpaper allows more light to be reflected.
v Check you have no leads trailing e.g. from televisions, lamps etc.
v Make sure all carpets are secured down and avoid scatter rugs.
Health v Take your time; don’t rush out of bed or chair. The phone or the door can wait!
v Look after your feet.
v Eat regularly - breakfast is particularly important.
v Gentle regular exercise has been proven to improve muscle tone and co-ordination.
v Get your eyes examined regularly - a new prescription could really make a difference.
These are just a few steps you can take that will help you to stay on your feet, so to speak. Simple but effective - why not give them a go. Further information can be found at:- http://www.helptheaged.org.uk/en-gb/AdviceSupport/HomeSafety/FallPrevention
