Building Research Establishment (Scotland)

Dr David Kelly, Laura Birrell and Peter Wilder gave a very full and interesting presentation on the BRE Innovation project undergoing development at the Ravenscraig site in Motherwell. The main aims of energy efficiency, sustainability, affordability and community were discussed, taking into account the Sullivan Report with an aim for 0 carbon buildings by 2017. Dr Kelly envisaged that safety features could be included in the development and that HSS members could have some input. A link to HSS or even a dedicated page on their website may be feasible. Dr Kelly queried whether or not a list of local suppliers would be available. Dr Kelly will get back to HSS to discuss information that could be included in a children’s teaching pack. Teresa thanked the team for their input and expressed the hope that there would be future collaboration.

Sharon Ramsey/Lesley Nish

Sharon gave an extremely interesting presentation on the increasing  significance in hair straighteners as a cause of burns in young children particularly Scotland and England but not apparently Ireland. In 2007 66% of the said burns occurred to males under 2 years. Mainly hand but also feet and legs have been affected. Teresa asked if any of the pictures within the presentation would be available for use by HSS however Sharon explained this may not be possible due to confidentiality issues. Lesley followed by detailing the pilot project in GGC – Straight Off Straight In Straight Away where people are encouraged to use heat resistant storage bags and store straighteners immediately after use. Teresa advised HSS would be interested in supporting the proposed December launch however possible- particularly on the website. It was decided that following both excellent presentations that an article on the dangers of this type of burn should be put on the website. Teresa thanked Sharon and Lesley for their presentations and time.
