Five days of testing in Fife saw 45% of electric blankets fail safety checks.

Environmental Services completed their annual testing week from 19th – 23rd October. 420 blankets were tested in total. 230 passed the test, however 190 were found to be unsafe.

Geoff Bates, Team Leader said, “This project began in 2004 and almost 3500 blankets have been tested over that five year period. Results continue to show that people are risking their safety by using old, unsafe blankets.

Geoff continued, “Fire crews in Fife still attend house fires caused by electric blanket failures. One of the main reasons for older blankets failing the safety test is due to a lack of overheat protection. Electric blanket owners can refer to the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure that their blanket meets the current safety standards”.

As an addition to the service, unsafe blankets were collected and handed over to Nathans Wastesavers, a textile recycling company. These old blankets will have the elements stripped out, cleaned and re-used as a normal blanket or shredded for filling purposes.
