Homecoming Scotland was the event of 2009. Home Safety Scotland (HSS) hopes that the Year of safety will be the event of 2010.
Delusions of grandeur? Perhaps, but the practitioners who make up the Scotland wide HSS know that the flip side of all the good points in Scotland brought out last year is that, included in the bad points, are the many thousands of people who suffer physically, emotionally and financially from unintentional injury sustained at home.
We have committed to a year long programme of awareness raising on the significance of injury and advice on small changes in behaviour and the physical environment of the home that can have a huge impact on the risk of injury.
The focus of the year will be a web based calendar of topics - with facts, advice, competitions and links to other sites. Members of HSS will focus on the calendar in their daily work ensuring that across Scotland the public will be given the same message at the same time.
The year will be launched in Ikea Edinburgh on 3rd February 2010 – an ideal venue to focus on the home. Members of the Scottish Parliament, the Electrical Safety Council and Scottish Accident Prevention Council have been invited to attend. HSS will be on hand to advise visitors on what to look for in their own home to reduce injury, particularly in the two most vulnerable groups, children and the elderly. A competition sponsored by Ikea will be run to ensure that children are not excluded from the message.
But safety matters 24/7 not just on one day or during one of the many weeks of safety that are celebrated throughout the year. The following topics will be addressed all year but focussed on during the following months- January/February Falls March /April Electrical Equipment Safety May/June Burns and Scalds July/August Garden Safety September/October Carbon Monoxide and other Poisoning November/December Christmas Electrical Safety
HSS are working towards a Safer Homecoming for the people of Scotland.
